César Chávez: An American Hero

César Chávez Activities for Teachers & Students. With Cesar Chavez Day just around the corner (recognized on March 31), I have developed several César Chávez activities that are easy for teachers and fun (and meaningful) for students. These activities include my collaborative poster, unscramble activities, and coloring page featuring a quote by Chávez.

This year, special attention is being paid to Cesar Chavez as a new movie is being released depicting his life spent organizing and fighting for equality for migrant laborers through non-violent means. The movie, Cesar Chavez: History is Made One Step at a Time, stars Michael Pena and John Malkovich, was directed by Diego Luna and is enjoying support from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Recently President Obama hosted a screening of the movie at the White House and began his introduction with these remarks :

Obama

"Welcome to the White House.  We are here to celebrate the life of an American hero.  Cesar Chavez was a man who devoted this brief time that we have on Earth to making sure that this country lived up to some of its lofty ideals, the words of our founding, the idea that all of us are created equal — a man who organized others to widen the circle of opportunity not just for the people he knew, but for future generations."

Now is the perfect time to explore the life's work of César Chávez.  To help teachers celebrate this important man I have created several César Chávez Activities.

Cesar Chavez Activity: Collaborative Portrait Poster

The perfect way to celebrate César Chávez Day is with my large collaborative portrait of Mr. Chávez which is done collaboratively by your entire class. Each student in your class gets one page of the poster to color (English and Spanish included). The pieces are then cut out and the poster is assembled to reveal a large portrait of César Chávez.

This poster comes complete with his famous slogan, in both an English version (Yes We Can!) and a Spanish version (¡Si Se Puede!).

Poster Details: There are 35 pieces in my poster and each piece fits on 8.5″ x 11″ standard copy paper. The finished poster makes a 5 x 7 grid (that is approx. 35" x 49").  Your exact poster size will depend on your printer settings. Some teachers like to show their students what they will be making, and others like to keep it a secret until the end for a really fun surprise! My poster is a great supplement/complement to any César Chávez lesson you are teaching or celebration your class is having.

You will find my poster of César Chávez HERE.

In all of my collaborative portraits, I always add bonus activities to help teachers when children finish their piece of the poster early, and to provide students with something of their own to keep (since collaborative projects don't get to go home with all of the children).

César Chávez Activity: Unscramble The Portrait

I have pulled out the bonus activities from my Cesar Chavez poster and am providing them for FREE. If you are new to my posters and my work, I hope you will try this free resource with your students. You can find it on Teachers Pay Teachers HERE

Over the years teachers have asked me to create resources for only my unscramble activities, which I have done. You can find all that I have HERE.

The handouts in my unscramble activities are for various levels, so you can find one that fits your grade level.

Included are:

  • Unscramble the portrait drawing (great for older students – not pictured)
  • Unscramble the portrait cut and paste (with two grid variations)
  • César Chávez coloring page

I have also included a coloring page using one of Chávez's quote. Have your students discuss the meaning of his quote while they color.

"Preservation of one's own culture does not require contempt or disrespect for other cultures." ~César Chávez
